Entering Farmer #20292

I am a 27-year old master’s student in Education, Development and Community Engagement at Penn State University in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education. I spent the first 20 years of my life in Central PA then enlisted in the Navy as a Construction Mechanic. After a 5 year enlistment I returned to Penn State to pursue my education and was conferred my bachelor’s in Agricultural Science with a minor in Forest Ecosystems. My current goal is to start a farm and join the Veteran Farmer Network by creating a nonprofit that will focus on empowering veterans and community members to pursue careers in agriculture. I think there are a few things as important as feeding the country, and I hope that I can become a part of the solution to the problems we are seeing on a national and global scale. I have experience working with multiple NGOS, academia, and state-level organizations.

We are a Christian married couple looking for a lease purchase option on a farm with acreage and a house. Barn and fencing would be a plus. We had a lease option on a farm in Douglassville pa. The owner decided to sell and were not approved for a mortgage. We have currently been working on our credit and are hoping to purchase in 1-3 years. We currently have 25 dairy goats and 36 chicks. We make goat milk soap from our dairy goats and want to start selling goat milk cheese & goat milk yogurt. We farmed for 5 years and were seeling out of our farm fresh eggs. We grew and made fresh cut flowers & bouquets. During Covid-19 we offered delivery service. We grew microgreens and would like to grow fresh produce. We grew and sold blueberries as well. Our farm is called Dirt Blessings Farms. My husband is a contractor so he is very handy and I clean houses and work temping as a dental assistant. We would love the opportunity to lease a farm and buy in 1-3 years. Thank you for taking the time to read our summarized story. God bless!

In the past I was a grower of herbs and native plants….always organic and sustainable and I had the same standards for my landscape design and install business. Of special concern and interest to me is our native trees that are being destroyed by insects and disease. So in addition to growing plants, I want to work with trees. Starting out I will continue working as a mental health therapist for substance disorder clients in order to make payments to purchase the farm. In addition to what I described above, I want to establish and orchard and vegetable production. Ideally the location would be suitable for selling plants and produce from the farm….a small farm store.

As I am writing this it brings back memories of my grandparents farm which was in Clearfield County, and the largest poultry farm in the region (organic, sustainable, and my siblings and I working along side of our dad planting crops and gathering eggs and helping out in the store. There was also twi acres of vegetable gardening on iur damily property as well that kept us busy and out of trouble all summer. We drank raw milk. No one we knew was using dangerous chemicals then. So I bring this life time of experience to what I plan to do now.

At the farm I also want to be passing on to others my knowledge about herbs, native plants, and much more, through classes at the farm. Demonstrate a better way of living and raising families.

I hope to find a farm or homestead in these Allegheny and Appalachian mountain areas where I am so happy….the fresh air and abundance of mountain water. I am at Boalsburg presently. Though I will consider other rural areas as well: I lived in Mechanicsburg previously so I know there is good agricultural soil in Cumberland and York Counties. There are many areas with good soil to farm in Pennsylvania.

Ideally there is a farm that is organic and sustainable….or not farmed for many years if it was farmed by conventional methods. A farm where the owner would be willing to sell directly to me. If possible with lower payments fir a few years starting out, as I establish and build my gardens and inventory.

I would be a good match fir someone who wants to pass on our history and heritage in Pennsylvania. I was the oldest grandchild of elderly grandparents and older parents, so there is what I have learned through them about times long before I was born.

I am also interested in nutrition and I am considered a good cook and some have called me a chef. Maybe I could have a small restaurant at the farm as well. My hopes and dreams. There is do much culturally lost we need to be teaching.

I have thought about farm animals. Most likely I will have some chickens. It would be great to have a pond with fish. I want mature trees and woods for my kitties to roan. I will get a dog or two. I need to spend my time and energy developing the growing of herbs and native plants and trees. Depending how much land there is, maybe pastures could be established for cows, steers, goats or lambs.

I would consider any size farm or homestead. ideally at least 40 acres -300+. I would consider less. However, I have very good administrative skills and I am capable of managing much more.

I am a 40 year old married man with two children. I’ve always loved nature and to be outdoors. My interest in gardening began at a young age. I spent quite a few years working my way up to the point where I had a marketable quantity of produce. I continued this effort for some time. My focus was always on organic methods. I’ve also raised sheep and goats. I have earned my Bachelors degree in Environmental Science. I have worked at a myriad of agricultural/horticulture jobs from farms, to nurseries, garden center, and landscaping. My current position is Agricultural Director at Pocono Organics in Long Pond, PA. Pocono Organics is a premier regenerative organic farm/greenhouse/market and Cafe. I have been with them from the start and quickly made my way into the position which I now hold. I never owned a farm and previously operated my entrepreneurial effort called ‘Sacred Earth Farms’ off of land leased from family. I am using Farmlink because I am very interested to explore opertunities to access land and further my personal farming goals. I am looking to lease, lease to own, or buy a farm roughly in the range of 10 to 20 acres. I am open to pursuing the best opportunity, but ideally the farm would be located in southeast Pennsylvania. I would like to continue organic farming practices in a mixed production setting, ie. Vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, and livestock. Many factors could influence my farming business plan from what is produced to how it is to be marketed. Housing on site is preferable.
