Seeking 5–10 Acres for Family Homestead and Small-Scale Farming in Pennsylvania
My family and I are looking for 5–10 acres in Pennsylvania to establish a family homestead and small-scale farm. Our goal is to live on the land, become more self-sufficient, and produce much of our own food while generating some supplemental income through the sale of crops and livestock.
We are interested in land suitable for a combination of vegetable gardening, fruit trees, orchard development, and raising livestock such as chickens, sheep, and goats. Ideally, the property would offer a mix of open or tillable land and wooded areas, with sufficient space for a home, barn, greenhouse, gardens, and animal enclosures.
We are open to vacant land, undeveloped acreage, or properties with existing farm infrastructure. We prefer fully wooded vacant land with mature trees. We will do the necessary work.
Affordable land with good agricultural potential, reliable water access, suitable soil, and residential building possibilities is a priority. We would also consider properties that require gradual improvements as we develop the farm over time.
We envision a practical, family-oriented homestead focused primarily on subsistence farming, with a modest commercial component to help offset operating expenses and support long-term sustainability.

My goal is to have a farm and have land for my children and grandchildren to grow our own food. I want to not only educate my family but our community as well. They need to realize that growing your own food has so many benefits. I also want to educate my community by offering farm to table dinners. I have no professional experience with farming or agriculture. I currently garden as a hobby and have a few chickens. Im as green as they come with stuff like this. I have a degree in Network Technology, and the 6 years since graduating and getting this degree has been nothing but hating every moment of it. I want to farm to not only do something fulfilling for my own life, but also feed the community. I want to provide good, healthy natural foods to my neighbors and family. I know its what I need to do with my life, my calling. My goal, is to be able to replace my current job, allowing me to focus on farming. I have a family of six, we dream of having a property we can all live on in separate houses. I do not have much farm experience with a good friend of mine who has farmed his entire life has agreed to help. We are looking for a large enough piece of property for each of us to have a house and to also farm the land. We have some additional business ideas for the property like raising some beef, pork, chicken, eggs. While having a market and some agri-tourism. I have a very general business plan, partly depends on the piece of property.

My interest in agriculture began shortly after graduating from high school, when I worked for nearly two years with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture as a laboratory technician, assisting with seed testing and germination. That experience gave me an appreciation for the science, care, and dedication that go into producing healthy crops and supporting Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry. I genuinely enjoyed that work, and looking back, I wish I had pursued more opportunities in the field. Now, I am interested in reconnecting with that passion and exploring the possibility of establishing a future in farming. As a woman of color, I would be proud to bring my background, perspective, and work ethic into an industry where I hope to make a meaningful contribution. I want to be part of the future of crop production, learn from experienced farmers, and build the knowledge and skills necessary to become a responsible and successful land steward. My goal is to find an opportunity where I can grow, contribute to Pennsylvania agriculture, and potentially build something lasting that can benefit my family and community for generations to come. I see this as an opportunity not only to pursue something I have always valued, but also to help create greater representation and opportunity for women of color in agriculture.

As a first-generation farmer, I’m looking to turn what I truly believe is my purpose in life into a reality. I have hands-on experience caring for horses and chickens, and I’ve raised chickens and managed the daily responsibilities that come with caring for animals. While I’m still developing my agricultural skills, I’m eager to learn from experienced farmers and gain hands-on knowledge of regenerative agriculture, livestock management, hay production, and growing flowers and vegetables. My dream is to establish a diversified regenerative farm where I can live and work full-time, raise animals, grow seasonal cut flowers and produce, and potentially develop a small dairy and sheep operation. I’m looking for farmland to lease, rent to own, or purchase through owner financing, ideally with a home on the property and the ability to keep livestock. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled than being in the dirt, working the land, and building a life centered around animals and agriculture. I know the journey of becoming a first-generation farmer will come with challenges, but I’m committed to putting in the work, learning along the way, and building something meaningful. It would be an incredible opportunity to learn from established farmers, contribute to the agricultural community, and one day pass that knowledge, education, and opportunities on to the next generation.

I grew up in South Africa, where farming was a significant part of my upbringing. Both my mother and grandmother owned farms, and I spent much of my life around agricultural operations, livestock, machinery, and general farm maintenance. Although I haven’t been formally employed as a ranch or farm hand, I have gained valuable hands-on experience through working on family farms and being involved in the day-to-day responsibilities that come with maintaining rural properties.
I have experience caring for horses, which I’ve personally owned, as well as working around cattle and other farm animals. I’m comfortable with general animal care, property maintenance, fencing, repairs, and a wide range of practical farm tasks. I’m mechanically inclined, enjoy working with my hands, and am confident in my ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment and machinery. I also have experience operating heavy machinery, although I don’t hold formal operator certifications, as these weren’t required for the work I did in South Africa.
I’m 6’7″, physically strong, hardworking, and comfortable with demanding physical labor and long hours. I’m a quick learner, adaptable, and more than willing to put in extra time and effort to develop any skills I may be lacking. I take pride in being dependable, resourceful, and someone who can be trusted to get things done.
I’m currently living in Austin, Texas, and am legally authorized to work in the United States. I’m willing to relocate anywhere in the country for the right long-term opportunity.
**What I’m ultimately looking for is more than just employment. My dream is to dedicate myself to a farm or ranch, help it grow and succeed, and eventually become its owner through years of hard work, commitment, and responsibility.**
I’m particularly interested in connecting with farmers or ranchers who are approaching retirement, don’t have family members interested in continuing their operation, or are looking for a trustworthy individual to take over what they’ve spent their lives building.
I don’t currently have the financial means to purchase land or provide a down payment, but I have practical skills, a strong work ethic, and a genuine willingness to dedicate myself to the success and preservation of a property. Ideally, I’m seeking a farm succession, mentorship, or work-to-ownership arrangement where I can begin by contributing my labor and skills, gradually take on greater responsibilities, and ultimately earn ownership of the land and property through a mutually agreed, legally documented succession plan.
Because I would be relocating and don’t have investment capital, I would need on-site accommodation and a way to cover my basic living expenses while working.
I understand that earning someone’s trust and taking responsibility for their life’s work is not something that happens overnight. I’m willing to invest the years, effort, and dedication required to prove myself. My goal isn’t simply to acquire property, but to build a meaningful future in agriculture while continuing and improving something another person has worked hard to establish.
