We are a couple (37 and 32) with 2 kids (4 and 9) and we’re looking for land. I have around 10 years’ experience managing medium-scale organic vegetable operations and 5 years’ experience in the Weatherization industry performing energy efficiency retrofits and renovations.
We have a lot of practice with season extension strategies and greenhouse production systems, and also have some livestock experience. We’re looking for land that has the potential to support several businesses that’s controlled by someone who wants to see several interdependent land-based businesses happening on the property and who is willing to entertain the possibility of sharing equity and/or lease to own arrangements.
Organic vegetable production is what we’re good at, but we’re all too familiar with the challenge of paying all the bills with just this operation. We think a successful business model would need to include other revenue generating businesses.
Some popular examples: Agritourism; Bed and breakfast/vacation rentals; Event hosting (weddings, conferences, etc.); Farm to table restaurant; Edible and medicinal mushrooms; Apiary; Tree fruit; and Chickens
The exact combination of businesses that can help an operation like this succeed is dependent on the market needs of surrounding communities and many variables that are site-specific.
