Entering Farmer 20112
We are a young married couple interested in starting a sustainable farm business in Southcentral Pennsylvania. We bonded over our interest in growing and preserving our own food, and we hope to establish our own farm in the near future to allow us to provide others with homegrown, wholesome food. We would like to focus on grass-fed livestock, including pastured poultry and beef.
We have been working to prepare ourselves for the transition to a farming operation by studying the business side of farming, including attending a Small Business Development Center workshop in Carlisle this fall, completion of online agriculture education courses, completion of an eight-month small-scale farm business and innovative sustainable agriculture technique course through University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, and through extensive reading. We also have an academic background in soil science and conservation from Penn State University and University of Delaware. A CSA work-share program was completed in the summer of 2015 in order to gain a better understanding of vegetable farming and the CSA market system. We have employment background with a local farm specializing in direct marketing of pork and turkeys.
Additionally we have raised and processed our own pastured broilers.
Through these experiences, we realized we would like to build a farm enterprise centered around pasture-raised livestock with numerous potential side businesses. We are looking at renting or buying 10-35 acres.
